New Changes for Expats in Germany: What You Need to Know in 2023!

As we enter the third month of the year, several changes affecting expats in Germany have come into effect. Here are the most important ones to take note of:

1. Minimum wage increase:  As of March 1, 2023, the minimum wage in Germany has increased from €10.45 to €10.85 per hour.

2. Higher social security contributions:  From March 1, 2023, social security contributions have increased by 0.2 percent, with employees now paying 7.6 percent and employers paying 7.6 percent.

3. Health insurance changes:  The maximum income threshold for statutory health insurance has increased from €64,350 to €67,050 per year.

4. Higher pension contributions:  Pension contributions have increased by 0.2 percent, with employees now paying 19.6 percent and employers paying 19.6 percent.

5. New rules for renting out holiday homes:  New regulations have come into effect for renting out holiday homes. Homeowners must now register with the local authorities and obtain a permit.

6. Changes to the road tax:  From March 1, 2023, the road tax will be based on the CO2 emissions of a vehicle, with higher emissions resulting in a higher tax.

7. New regulations for e-scooters:  From March 1, 2023, new regulations will apply to e-scooters. E-scooters must now have a maximum speed of 20 km/h and must be fitted with a bell.

8.Changes to the Blue Card:  As of March 1, 2023, the minimum salary requirement for the EU Blue Card has increased from €55,200 to €58,800 per year.
